A strange notice appears in the morning paper of a perfectly ordinary small English village, Chipping Cleghorn: "A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 13th, at Little Paddocks, at 6:30 p.m. Friends please accept this, the only notification."

Little Paddocks is the home of Letitia Blacklock, her companion, her young cousins, her highly-strung maid and a lodger. The announcement excites the curiosity of other Clipping Cleghorn residents who duly present themselves for 6.30. But none of these is the victim of the startling murder. Miss Marple arrives just after the event to identify the body of a mysterious stranger.

With the arrival of the police a series of puzzling circumstances begin to emerge – an apparently unused door that opens perfectly, a lost coffee cup, a vase of flowers with no water … and a shocking second death occurs. Miss Marple works with the Inspector to unravel the complicated personal stories of the inhabitants of Little Paddocks and provides the final solution at some risk to herself.
